DENTURES
It may be necessary for some people to get a full or partial denture to replace damaged and missing teeth during their lifetime. Dentures can help you to continue to eat and drink normally. They can also help to maintain your appearance by providing cheek support to reduce sagging of the face.
There are two main types of removable dentures:
- full dentures – are made when all of the teeth in one jaw are missing. They are made from plastic/acrylic material.
- partial dentures – are made when some teeth are missing while other teeth remain. These dentures can be made from plastic, metal or a combination of both. It is important that your remaining teeth are in good health, to support the partial denture.
Dentures should be removed at night before you go to sleep. Keep cleaned dentures in a cup of fresh cold water, or in a clean dry container overnight. Use a soft toothbrush or denture brush to clean the dentures morning and night. Do not use toothpaste to clean dentures.
Your dentist will talk with you about which option might be best for you, based on your individual circumstances. If you have existing dentures that stop fitting well or become damaged, contact your dentist to discuss possible solutions.
